Germanium Windows and Ge Wafers
Our Germanium Windows are engineered with three distinct anti-reflection coating options to cater to a variety of applications:
- 3 – 5μm Coating: Optimized for mid-infrared uses.
- 3 – 12μm Coating: Ideal for broadband multispectral systems.
- 8 – 12μm Coating: Perfect for thermal imaging solutions.
Given its high refractive index, applying an anti-reflection coating is essential to ensure optimal light transmission. Germanium exhibits a phenomenon known as thermal runaway, where its transmission efficiency diminishes as temperatures rise. Therefore, these windows are best suited for operating environments below 100°C. Additionally, the material’s high density (5.33 g/cm³) should be factored into designs for weight-sensitive applications. With a Knoop Hardness of 780 kg/mm², roughly double that of magnesium fluoride, germanium is highly durable and well-suited for rugged infrared optical systems.
